10. Helen - Ameerika Ühendriigid / USA, Washington

Kui aus olla, siis mul polnud mingit Eestist ärakolimise plaani. Ma olin noor ja väga eurooplane, kuid tahtsin maailmas natuke ringi vaadata. USA tundus selline mitmekihiline koht, nii et miks ka siis mitte? Ma võtsin kõigist kohustustest aasta vabaks, tegin eeltööd ja lendasin Washington, DCsse kohale. Ja mul oli siin üks elu põnevaim ja seiklusterohkeim aasta! Ma kogesin palju palju uut ning kohtusin paljude vahvate inimestega, nende hulgas ühe eluaegse sõbra ja ka tulevase abikaasaga.

Ma reisisin ringi ja avastasin Ameerikat, mis on nii suur ja osariigiti nii erinev, et vahest on raske hoomata, et asud ühes ja samas riigis. Loodus, aktsent, finantsiline olukord, haridustase ja inimeste eluvaated on olenevalt paikkonnast väga erinevad. Minu meelest on võimatu leida kogu Ameerikat esindavat ameeriklast. Näiteks Washington, DCs teatakse, mis Eesti on ja inimestel on eestlastest tuttavaidki. Mõnes Kesk-Ameerika osariigis aga pole keegi Eestist kuulnudki või isegi ei teata, et Euroopas on rohkem riike kui paar suuremat. Või mis Euroopa on. Ma tean, et hetkel üldjuhul (ja eriti praegust poliitilist maastikku arvesse võttes) ei peeta ameeriklastest suurt, kuid neid on ohtralt, kel muu maailma ees piinlik on. Üldiselt on USA inimesed sõbralikud ja abivalmid ning ma olen leidnud mitmeid toredaid sõpru. Ühe naljaka faktina kutsuvad paar mu ameeriklasest sõpra mind "eurooplaseks", mis tähendab nende meelest otsekohesusest ning asjade välja ütlemist. Vahest tõesti ei jaksa ninnu-nännutada ning kasulikum on kohe härjal sarvist haarata. Mul pole raske inimeste juttu katkestada, kui see kusagile ei vii. Eurooplasele antakse "ebaviisakus" andeks ja asjad saavad kiiremalt tehtud. Ühesõnaga, USA on üks omamoodi maa, mis on mu teiseks koduks saanud. Ma olen siin nüüdseks elanud 15 aasta kanti ja kõige teistsugusega ära harjunud, kuid leian alati taasavastusrõõmu läbi mind külastavate inimeste. Et miks toiduportsjonid nii suured on? Miks võõrad inimesed sulle tänaval naeratavad? Mis mõttes ei saa poodi jalutada ja peab autoga sõitma? Miks kõnniteesid igal pool pole? Miks inimesed pidzhaama seljas poes käivad? Ma saan 18.a. hääletada, aga ei saa alkoholi osta?? Mis asi see tšekiraamat veel on? Ja palju muidu toredaid küsimusi.

Koroona on muidugi suured elu ümberkorraldused teinud ja me oleme juba 9ndat nädalat kodused. Me abikaasaga saame mõlemad kodust töötada ning lapsel toimuvad koolitunnid Zoomi teel. Igal õhtul käime värsket õhku hingamas-jalgpalli mängimas-jalutamas-tuulelohet lennutamas-matkaradu avastamas jms. Siin on palju parke ja mängualasid, kus on kõigil distantsi hoidmiseks piisavalt ruumi, kuid mida soojem ilm, seda rohkem inimesi me kohtame. Tasapisi hakatakse osariike nn lahti tegema, aga kohalik üldine arvamus on, et vara veel. Ootame veel. Loomulikult igatseme me kõik oma sõpru, suhtluselu ja pea igal nädalavahetusel toimuvaid kokkusaamisi, kuid hoiame kõik hetkel igaks juhuks distantsi. Me ju juba tunneme kõik siin inimesi, kelle elu on koroona segi paisanud. Aga loodame jätkuvalt parimat.

Selle kõige sees oli Kadriga seanss nii tore rõõmukild ja toredat juttu täis värvikas kogemus. Isegi kui mitte ükski pilt poleks välja tulnud oli see võrratu elamus.

To be honest, I had no plan to move out of Estonia. I was young and very European, but wanted to look around the world. The US seemed like such a multi-layered place, so why not? I took off from all my mandatory commitments and flew to Washington DC. And I had one of the most exciting and adventurous years of my life here! I experienced a lot of new things and met many great people, including a lifelong friend and a future spouse.

I traveled around and discovered America, which is so big and so different from state to state that it can sometimes be hard to tell you're in the same country. Nature, accent, financial situation, level of education and people's views on life vary greatly from place to place. I find it impossible to find an American who represents the whole of America. For example, in Washington, DC, it is known what Estonia is and people also know Estonians. In some Central American states, however, no one has heard of Estonia or even knows that there are more countries in Europe than a few larger ones. Or what Europe is. I know that Americans are generally not considered great at the moment (and especially given the current political situation), but there are plenty of them who are embarrassed by the rest of the world. In general, the people of the United States are friendly and helpful, and I have made many nice friends. One funny fact is that a couple of my American friends call me "European," which means straightforwardness and saying things out loud. Sometimes you really don't have time to pinch a nose, and it's more useful to grab a bull's horn right away. It's not hard for me to interrupt people's talk if it doesn't lead anywhere. The European is forgiven for being "rude" and things can be done faster. In short, the United States is a kind of country that has become my second home. I have lived here for 15 years now and have become accustomed to everything else, but I always find the joy of rediscovery through the people who visit me. Why are food portions so large? Why do strangers smile at you on the street? In what sense can you not walk to the store and have to drive? Why are there no sidewalks everywhere? Why do people wear pajamas to the store? I get 18 to vote but can't buy alcohol ? What is checkbook? And lots of other nice questions.

Corona, of course, has undergone major life changes, and we are already at home for the 9th week. My husband and I can both work from home, and the child has school lessons on Zoom. Every night we breathe fresh air-play football-walk-fly a kite- go to hiking trails and so on. There are many parks and playgrounds here, where everyone has enough space to keep their distance, but the warmer the weather, the more people we meet. Gradually, the states will be "opened", but the local general opinion is that it is still too early. Let's wait more. Of course, we all miss our friends, our social life and our meetings almost every weekend, but we all keep our distance at the moment. After all, we all know people here whose lives have been confused by the corona. But we continue to hope for the best.

Inside it all, the session with Kadri was such a nice piece of joy and a colorful experience full of great talk. Even if no picture came out, it was a great experience.
